Understanding Optical Brighteners: What Are They and How They Affect Our Well-being

When purchasing food-grade paper, we often see the "No Optical Brighteners" label. What exactly are they? Why do they appear in paper products, and how do they affect our health? Let’s take a closer look!

What are Optical Brighteners (OBAs)?

They are chemical substances widely used in the paper, textile, and cleaning product industries. Their primary function is to make paper or fabric appear whiter and brighter, catering to the common consumer perception that "whiter equals cleaner."

Can it be detected?

In non-food-grade paper, such as office paper, magazine paper, or certain low-cost tissues, optical brighteners are frequently used. When exposed to UV light, these materials will emit a distinct blue-white glow.

The Potential Risks

The concern is when they added to paper that comes into direct contact with food, or when used in high-temperature and humid environments, these agents may be released and migrate onto the food itself.

  • Long-term accumulation: Chronic ingestion can lead to accumulation in the liver and skin.

  • Health burden: It increases the body's metabolic burden and carries potential risks of allergic reactions.

This is why international food safety standards (such as NZ FSANZ, U.S. FDA and EU regulations) maintain strict restrictions on materials that come into contact with food.

How to Choose Safely?

When selecting paper for food use, always ensure the product is labelled "No Optical Brighteners" and, ideally, has passed some certifications.
