In last September, the Australian Climate Service released its National Climate Risk Assessment, a landmark report that outlines the growing threats posed by climate change across the country. And the findings are sobering.

A Web of Escalating Risks
The report identifies 63 major climate risks, with 11 marked as critical, affecting everything from public health and infrastructure to ecosystems and coastal communities. As global temperatures rise, extreme events such as heatwaves, floods, or wildfires, are becoming more frequent, more intense, and increasingly overlapping.
Human, Environmental, and Economic Toll of this Climate Crossroads
Under a +3°C scenario, heat-related deaths could increase fivefold in some Australian cities (+444% for Sydney, +423% for Darwin). Economic productivity losses due to heat exposure could reach $AUD135-423 billion by 2063. Up to 70% of plant species may face climate conditions beyond their current tolerance, threatening biodiversity and ecological balance.
