"For too long, PFAS chemicals have poisoned our land, water, and communities, while governments looked the other way" - Senator Lidia Thorpe.
Australia has just taken a step in addressing one of the most persistent environmental and health challenges of our time: PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), often called "forever chemicals". After more than a year of hearings, site visits, and expert testimony, the Senate Select Committee on PFAS has released its final report, a nearly 400-page document that exposes regulatory gaps and sets out 47 recommendations for urgent action.

Why this Report Matters
PFAS are synthetic chemicals used in thousands of products. They are virtually indestructible, persisting in soil, water, and even human blood for decades. International research has linked PFAS exposure to immune dysfunction, reproductive issues, cancer risks and developmental effects.
The inquiry found that Australia's health advice lags behind international standards, downplaying risks and failing to adequately support affect communities, including First Nations groups living near contaminated sites.
Key Takeaways from the Senate Report
47 recommendations: A national PFAS monitoring program, standardized drinking water guidelines, and a public contamination map.
Phase-out and bans: A full ban on PFAS in firefighting foams and mandatory labeling for PFAS-containing products. Senator Thorpe alsu urged a default ban on all PFAS chemicals, with exceptions only for essential uses under strict review.
Health support: Subsidized blood testing, cancer screening, and mental health services for highly exposed communities.
Thorpe summed up the urgency: "These chemicals are the asbestos of the 21st century."
